What Hariyali Teej means
Hariyali Teej, on the third day of the bright half of Shravan, is the "green Teej" — a festival of the monsoon, when the fields turn green, and of Parvati's love for Shiva. It is one of three Teej festivals of the rainy season, with Kajari Teej a fortnight later and Hartalika Teej in Bhadrapada.
Women dress in green, wear green bangles, apply mehndi, gather to swing on jhulas hung from trees and sing Teej songs about Shiva and Parvati and the rain. Married women fast for their husbands' long life and a happy marriage; unmarried girls pray for a husband like Shiva.
The festival also carries the bond between a daughter and her parents' home: the sindhara — clothes, bangles, sweets and ghewar sent from her mother's house — arrives a day before, and many newly married women spend Teej with their parents.
The story of Hariyali Teej
The Shiva Purana and folk tradition tell that Parvati, as Sati reborn, resolved to win Shiva again as her husband. She performed penance for years — some tellings say through 108 births — until Shiva, moved by her devotion, accepted her. Hariyali Teej celebrates their reunion, and Parvati is worshipped as Teej Mata.
Because Parvati won her husband through love and steadfastness, women pray to her for the same blessing — "akhand saubhagya", an unbroken married life.
