What Tulsidas Jayanti means

Tulsidas Jayanti, on Shravan Shukla Saptami, honours Goswami Tulsidas (c. 1532–1623), whose Ramcharitmanas brought the story of Rama to every home in North India in the people's language, Awadhi. It is recited daily in countless homes, sung in Ramlilas, and read in full (akhand path) on special occasions.

Tulsidas also wrote the Vinaya Patrika, the Kavitavali, the Gitavali and other works, and the Hanuman Chalisa is traditionally attributed to him. His Rama is both God and the ideal human being, and his message is devotion, humility and service.

The story of Tulsidas Jayanti

Tradition says Tulsidas was born at Rajapur, on the bank of the Yamuna in present-day Uttar Pradesh, and that his parents abandoned or lost him soon after birth. Raised in poverty, he was taught by the saint Narharidas. A famous story says that when he followed his wife Ratnavali to her father's home out of longing, she told him that if he had such love for Rama as for her body, he would be free — and he turned to a life of devotion.

He began the Ramcharitmanas on Ram Navami in 1574 at Ayodhya and completed it over about two years, partly in Varanasi. Legend tells that he was guided by Hanuman to the darshan of Rama at Chitrakoot. He died in Varanasi in 1623 at Assi Ghat; the Tulsi Ghat and the Sankat Mochan temple there are linked with his memory.
