Śrīrāmacandra kṛpālu bhaju man haraṇ bhavabhay dāruṇaṁ.
Navakañj locan kañj mukh kar kañj pad kañjāruṇaṁ.

O mind, worship merciful Shri Ramchandra, who removes the terrible fear of worldly existence — whose eyes are like fresh lotuses, whose face, hands and feet are lotuses, rosy like the red lotus.

  2. Stanza 2#

Kandarp agaṇit amit chavi navanīl nīrad sundaraṁ.
Paṭ pīt mānahuṁ taṛit ruci śuci naumi Janak sutāvaraṁ.

His beauty surpasses countless Kamadevas; he is lovely as a fresh dark-blue rain-cloud; his yellow garment shines like lightning. I bow to the pure husband of Janaka's daughter.

  3. Stanza 3#

Bhaju dīnabandhu dineś dānav daityavaṁś nikandanaṁ.
    Raghunand ānaṁdakand Kośalacand Daśarath nandanaṁ.

Worship the friend of the humble, the sun, the destroyer of the race of demons — the joy of the Raghus, the root of bliss, the moon of Kosala, the son of Dasharatha.

  4. Stanza 4#

Ājānubhuj śar cāpadhar saṁgrām jit Kharadūṣaṇaṁ.

A crown on his head, earrings, a beautiful tilak, and noble ornaments on his body; arms reaching to the knees, bearing bow and arrows, victor in battle over Khara and Dushana.

  5. Stanza 5#

Iti vadati Tulasīdās Śaṅkar Śeṣ muni man rañjanaṁ.
Mam hṛday kañj nivās kuru kāmādi khaladal gañjanaṁ.

Thus says Tulsidas: O delight of the minds of Shankara, Shesha and the sages, make your home in the lotus of my heart — you who crush the wicked host of lust and the other passions.

What Shri Ramchandra Kripalu Bhaju Man means

The hymn opens with an instruction to one's own mind — "bhaju man", "O mind, worship" — and then gives it something beautiful to hold: Rama with lotus eyes, face, hands and feet, dark and lovely as a rain-cloud, dressed in yellow that shines like lightning. Each stanza adds names and images, from "friend of the humble" to "moon of Kosala".

The last stanza carries Tulsidas's own signature and his one request: that Rama, who delights the hearts of Shiva, Shesha and the sages, should come to live in the lotus of his heart and destroy its enemies — lust, anger, greed and the rest.

Where Shri Ramchandra Kripalu Bhaju Man comes from

The hymn is pada 45 of the Vinaya Patrika, the collection of devotional songs and petitions written by Goswami Tulsidas (1532–1623), author of the Ramcharitmanas. Composed in Sanskritised Awadhi in the elaborate harigitika metre, it is one of the few Tulsidas songs sung everywhere as an aarti.

Many singers follow it with the chhand "Man jāhi rāceu milahi so baru…" from the Bal Kand of the Ramcharitmanas, sung by Sita's friends after Gauri blesses her, and the soratha "Jāni Gauri anukūl…". Tulsidas's text is in the public domain; the meanings here are our own.
