What Om Jai Shiv Omkara means

Om Jai Shiv Omkara praises Shiva as Omkara — the Lord who is the sacred sound Om itself. Its key idea comes in the line "Brahmā Viṣṇu Sadāśiv jānat avivekā": only the unwise see Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva as separate; in the syllable Om the three are one. So the aarti begins by naming all three and describing their faces, vehicles and arms together.

The later verses paint the familiar picture of Shiva the yogi — the Ganga in his hair, serpents and ash on his body, Parvati as half of himself, his home on Kailash and his seat as Vishwanath in Kashi. The final verse carries the signature of its poet, "Shivanand Swami".

  • LampA ghee diya or camphor (kapur) on a plate, waved clockwise before the deity
  • WithBell, conch or clapping; everyone sings the chorus together

  2. Begin with the chorus. Stand before the deity and sing the opening line together; it is repeated after every verse.
  3. Wave the lamp. Move the thali in slow clockwise circles before the deity — traditionally four times at the feet, twice at the navel, once at the face and seven times over the whole form.
  4. Sing every verse. One person may lead each verse while the others answer with the chorus.
  5. Close. Offer bel leaves and water to the linga, take the aarti over the flame and share the prasad.
