Explanation
Overcome by deep pity and sinking into sorrow, he said: Krishna, seeing my own people gathered here eager to fight (my body fails me, as the next verse says).
The word kṛpā usually means compassion, a virtue. But commentators point out that Krishna later calls this state kaśmala, a weakness (2.2), and Arjuna himself calls it kārpaṇya, a faint-heartedness (2.7). It is pity mixed with attachment to 'my own people' (svajana), not the even-handed compassion the Gita praises later. The word viṣīdan, sinking, gives the chapter its name: Arjuna-vishada, the despair of Arjuna.
