saṅkaro narakāyaiva kulaghnānāṃ kulasya ca |
This confusion leads to hell, both for those who destroy the family and for the family itself. Their ancestors fall too, deprived of the offerings of rice-balls and water.

Through these wrongs of the family-destroyers, which cause the mixing of social orders, the timeless duties of caste and family are ruined.

O Janardana, we have heard that people whose family traditions are destroyed dwell in hell for an indefinite time.

Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus on the battlefield, Arjuna cast aside his bow and arrows and sat down in the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with sorrow.

About Chapter 1 — Arjuna Vishada Yoga
The Gita opens on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, where the armies of the Kauravas and the Pandavas stand ready for war. The blind king Dhritarashtra asks his minister Sanjaya, who has been granted divine sight, to describe what is happening. Duryodhana surveys both armies and names their leading warriors, and the blowing of conch shells announces the start of battle. Arjuna asks Krishna, his charioteer, to place the chariot between the two armies. There he sees teachers, grandfathers, uncles, cousins and friends ready to fight and die. Overwhelmed by grief and compassion, Arjuna lists the evils that would follow the destruction of a family, declares that he will not fight, and sinks down in his chariot, dropping his bow and arrows.
