Chapter 7 verses with meaning

  1. Verse 7.1 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    śrībhagavānuvāca |
    mayyāsaktamanāḥ pārtha yogaṃ yuñjanmadāśrayaḥ |
asaṃśayaṃ samagraṃ māṃ yathā jñāsyasi tacchṛṇu ||

The Blessed Lord said: O Partha (Arjuna, son of Pritha), with your mind attached to Me, practising yoga and taking refuge in Me, hear how you will know Me completely and without doubt.

  2. Verse 7.2 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    ज्ञानं तेऽहं सविज्ञानमिदं वक्ष्याम्यशेषतः ।
    यज्ज्ञात्वा नेह भूयोऽन्यज्ज्ञातव्यमवशिष्यते ॥

    jñānaṃ te'haṃ savijñānamidaṃ vakṣyāmyaśeṣataḥ |
    yajjñātvā neha bhūyo'nyajjñātavyamavaśiṣyate ||

    मैं तुम्हें यह ज्ञान उसके अनुभव सहित पूरी तरह बताऊँगा, जिसे जान लेने के बाद इस संसार में और कुछ जानना शेष नहीं रहता।

I will explain to you fully this knowledge along with its direct realisation, knowing which nothing more remains to be known in this world.

  3. Verse 7.3 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    manuṣyāṇāṃ sahasreṣu kaścidyatati siddhaye |
yatatāmapi siddhānāṃ kaścinmāṃ vetti tattvataḥ ||

Among thousands of people, hardly one strives for perfection; and even among those who strive and succeed, hardly one knows Me in truth.

  4. Verse 7.4 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

bhūmirāpo'nalo vāyuḥ khaṃ mano buddhireva ca |
ahaṃkāra itīyaṃ me bhinnā prakṛtiraṣṭadhā ||

Earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego - these are the eight divisions of My material nature.

  5. Verse 7.5 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

apareyamitastvanyāṃ prakṛtiṃ viddhi me parām |
jīvabhūtāṃ mahābāho yayedaṃ dhāryate jagat ||

This is My lower nature. But know, O mighty-armed one, that beyond it is My higher nature, the living principle, by which this universe is sustained.

  6. Verse 7.6 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    etadyonīni bhūtāni sarvāṇītyupadhāraya |
ahaṃ kṛtsnasya jagataḥ prabhavaḥ pralayastathā ||

Understand that all beings arise from these two natures. I am the origin of the entire universe and also its dissolution.

  7. Verse 7.7 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    mattaḥ parataraṃ nānyatkiñcidasti dhanañjaya |
mayi sarvamidaṃ protaṃ sūtre maṇigaṇā iva ||

O Dhananjaya (winner of wealth, Arjuna), there is nothing whatsoever higher than Me. All this is strung on Me like pearls on a thread.

  8. Verse 7.8 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    raso'hamapsu kaunteya prabhāsmi śaśisūryayoḥ |
praṇavaḥ sarvavedeṣu śabdaḥ khe pauruṣaṃ nṛṣu ||

O son of Kunti, I am the taste in water, the light in the moon and sun, the syllable Om in all the Vedas, the sound in space, and the strength in human beings.

  9. Verse 7.9 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

puṇyo gandhaḥ pṛthivyāṃ ca tejaścāsmi vibhāvasau |
    jīvanaṃ sarvabhūteṣu tapaścāsmi tapasviṣu ||

    मैं पृथ्वी में पवित्र गंध हूँ और अग्नि में तेज हूँ। मैं सभी प्राणियों में जीवन हूँ और तपस्वियों में तप हूँ।

I am the pure fragrance of the earth and the brilliance in fire. I am the life in all beings and the austerity in ascetics.

  10. Verse 7.10 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

bījaṃ māṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ viddhi pārtha sanātanam |
    buddhirbuddhimatāmasmi tejastejasvināmaham ||

    हे पार्थ, मुझे सभी प्राणियों का सनातन बीज जानो। मैं बुद्धिमानों की बुद्धि हूँ और तेजस्वियों का तेज हूँ।

O Partha, know Me as the eternal seed of all beings. I am the intelligence of the intelligent and the radiance of the radiant.

  11. Verse 7.11 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    बलं बलवतां चाहं कामरागविवर्जितम् ।
    धर्माविरुद्धो भूतेषु कामोऽस्मि भरतर्षभ ॥

    balaṃ balavatāṃ cāhaṃ kāmarāgavivarjitam |
    dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo'smi bharatarṣabha ||

    मैं बलवानों का वह बल हूँ जो कामना और आसक्ति से रहित है। हे भरतश्रेष्ठ, सभी प्राणियों में मैं वह काम हूँ जो धर्म के विरुद्ध नहीं है।

I am the strength of the strong, free from craving and attachment. O best of the Bharatas, in all beings I am desire that does not go against dharma.

  12. Verse 7.12 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

Whatever states of being there are - sattvic (pure), rajasic (active) or tamasic (dull) - know that they all come from Me alone. Yet I am not in them; they are in Me.

  13. Verse 7.13 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभिः सर्वमिदं जगत् ।
    मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्यः परमव्ययम् ॥

    tribhirguṇamayairbhāvairebhiḥ sarvamidaṃ jagat |
    mohitaṃ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ paramavyayam ||

    तीनों गुणों से बने इन भावों से मोहित होकर यह सारा संसार मुझे नहीं पहचानता, जो इन गुणों से परे और अविनाशी हूँ।

Deluded by these states made of the three gunas, this whole world fails to recognise Me, who am beyond them and imperishable.

  14. Verse 7.14 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā |
māmeva ye prapadyante māyāmetāṃ taranti te ||

This divine illusion (maya) of Mine, made of the gunas, is very hard to cross. But those who take refuge in Me alone go beyond it.

  15. Verse 7.15 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

na māṃ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ |
    māyayāpahṛtajñānā āsuraṃ bhāvamāśritāḥ ||

    दुष्कर्म करने वाले, मूढ़ और अधम मनुष्य मेरी शरण नहीं लेते। माया ने उनकी बुद्धि हर ली है और वे आसुरी स्वभाव में डूबे रहते हैं।

Evildoers, the deluded and the lowest of people do not seek refuge in Me; their understanding is stolen by illusion, and they cling to a demonic nature.

  16. Verse 7.16 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

caturvidhā bhajante māṃ janāḥ sukṛtino'rjuna |
ārto jijñāsurarthārthī jñānī ca bharatarṣabha ||

O Arjuna, best of the Bharatas, four kinds of virtuous people worship Me: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise.

  17. Verse 7.17 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    teṣāṃ jñānī nityayukta ekabhaktirviśiṣyate |
priyo hi jñānino'tyarthamahaṃ sa ca mama priyaḥ ||

Of these, the wise one, ever united with Me and devoted to Me alone, is the best. I am extremely dear to the wise, and he is dear to Me.

  18. Verse 7.18 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tvātmaiva me matam |
āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā māmevānuttamāṃ gatim ||

All of these are noble, but I regard the wise one as My very Self. For, with a steady mind, he is fixed on Me alone as the highest goal.

  19. Verse 7.19 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    bahūnāṃ janmanāmante jñānavānmāṃ prapadyate |
vāsudevaḥ sarvamiti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ ||

At the end of many births, the wise one takes refuge in Me, knowing that Vasudeva (Krishna) is everything. Such a great soul is very rare.

  20. Verse 7.20 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    kāmaistaistairhṛtajñānāḥ prapadyante'nyadevatāḥ |
taṃ taṃ niyamamāsthāya prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā ||

Those whose understanding is carried away by various desires turn to other deities, following particular rituals, led by their own nature.

  21. Verse 7.21 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

yo yo yāṃ yāṃ tanuṃ bhaktaḥ śraddhayārcitumicchati |
tasya tasyācalāṃ śraddhāṃ tāmeva vidadhāmyaham ||

Whatever form a devotee wishes to worship with faith, I make that very faith of his firm and steady.

  22. Verse 7.22 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    sa tayā śraddhayā yuktastasyārādhanamīhate |
labhate ca tataḥ kāmānmayaiva vihitānhi tān ||

Endowed with that faith, he worships that form and obtains his desires from it - but in truth those rewards are granted by Me alone.

  23. Verse 7.23 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    antavattu phalaṃ teṣāṃ tadbhavatyalpamedhasām |
devāndevayajo yānti madbhaktā yānti māmapi ||

But the fruit gained by those of small understanding is perishable. Worshippers of the gods go to the gods, while My devotees come to Me.

  24. Verse 7.24 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    अव्यक्तं व्यक्तिमापन्नं मन्यन्ते मामबुद्धयः ।
    परं भावमजानन्तो ममाव्ययमनुत्तमम् ॥

    avyaktaṃ vyaktimāpannaṃ manyante māmabuddhayaḥ |
    paraṃ bhāvamajānanto mamāvyayamanuttamam ||

    अज्ञानी लोग मुझ अव्यक्त को केवल व्यक्त रूप धारण करने वाला मानते हैं। वे मेरे अविनाशी और सर्वोत्तम परम स्वरूप को नहीं जानते।

The unwise think of Me, the unmanifest, as having merely taken on a visible form, not knowing My supreme nature, which is imperishable and unsurpassed.

  25. Verse 7.25 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य योगमायासमावृतः ।
    मूढोऽयं नाभिजानाति लोको मामजमव्ययम् ॥

    nāhaṃ prakāśaḥ sarvasya yogamāyāsamāvṛtaḥ |
    mūḍho'yaṃ nābhijānāti loko māmajamavyayam ||

    अपनी योगमाया से ढका होने के कारण मैं सबके सामने प्रकट नहीं होता। यह मोहित संसार मुझ अजन्मा और अविनाशी को नहीं जानता।

Veiled by My yoga-maya (divine power), I am not revealed to everyone. This deluded world does not know Me, the unborn and imperishable.

  26. Verse 7.26 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    vedāhaṃ samatītāni vartamānāni cārjuna |
bhaviṣyāṇi ca bhūtāni māṃ tu veda na kaścana ||

O Arjuna, I know all beings of the past, the present and the future, but no one knows Me.

  27. Verse 7.27 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    icchādveṣasamutthena dvandvamohena bhārata |
sarvabhūtāni sammohaṃ sarge yānti parantapa ||

O Bharata, scorcher of foes, from birth all beings fall into confusion, deluded by the pairs of opposites that arise from liking and disliking.

  28. Verse 7.28 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

yeṣāṃ tvantagataṃ pāpaṃ janānāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām |
te dvandvamohanirmuktā bhajante māṃ dṛḍhavratāḥ ||

But people of virtuous deeds, whose sins have come to an end, become free from the delusion of opposites and worship Me with firm resolve.

  29. Verse 7.29 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

    jarāmaraṇamokṣāya māmāśritya yatanti ye |
te brahma tadviduḥ kṛtsnamadhyātmaṃ karma cākhilam ||

Those who take refuge in Me and strive for freedom from old age and death come to know Brahman fully, the inner Self, and all about action.

  30. Verse 7.30 · Sri KrishnaOpen →

sādhibhūtādhidaivaṃ māṃ sādhiyajñaṃ ca ye viduḥ |
prayāṇakāle'pi ca māṃ te viduryuktacetasaḥ ||

Those who know Me along with the material realm (adhibhuta), the divine realm (adhidaiva) and the realm of sacrifice (adhiyajna), with steady minds, know Me even at the time of departure.

About Chapter 7 — Jnana Vijnana Yoga

Krishna offers to explain knowledge of His nature and its direct realisation. He describes His two natures: the lower, eightfold material nature made of earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego, and the higher nature, the living principle that sustains the world. All things are strung on Him like pearls on a thread; He is the taste in water, the light of sun and moon, the sacred syllable Om. The world, bewildered by the three gunas, fails to recognise Him, yet those who take refuge in Him cross over this divine illusion. He names four kinds of devotees, praises the wise one above all, and explains that worship of other deities brings limited results, while those who know Him fully remember Him even at the hour of death.
