Explanation

I am the taste in water, O son of Kunti, the light of the moon and the sun, the sacred syllable Om in all the Vedas, sound in space, and the strength and vitality in human beings. The Divine is the essence of each thing.

Verses 7.8 to 7.11 give examples of the thread running through the gems of 7.7. Each item names the essential quality that makes something what it is: water without taste, the sun without light, would not be themselves. Shankara reads this as the Lord being the essence in which things are strung. Ramanuja emphasises that these qualities exist because the Lord sustains them as their inner controller. Om in the Vedas reflects the Upanishadic view of Om as the essence of all sacred sound.

Living it today

When you drink water or see sunlight today, pause for a second and see in it a touch of the sacred.
