Explanation
I am the pure fragrance of the earth and the brilliance in fire. I am the life in all beings, and the austerity in those who practise austerity. Krishna continues naming the essential quality that makes each thing what it is.
Each element is linked to its distinctive quality in the Sankhya scheme: smell with earth, form and light with fire. Shankara notes that puṇya, pure, indicates the natural fragrance of earth, as opposed to unpleasant odours arising from contact with other things. Ramanuja reads all these as manifestations of the Lord as the inner self of things. Tapas in ascetics shows that even the power of spiritual discipline is a gift of the Divine, not merely personal achievement.
