Explanation

Deluded by these three states made of the gunas, the whole world does not recognise me, who am beyond them and imperishable. People are so absorbed in the play of nature that they miss its source. The play hides the player.

This sets up the famous teaching on maya in 7.14. Shankara explains that beings, captivated by the qualities of attraction and aversion, fail to see the Lord as distinct from and above the gunas. Ramanuja reads the delusion as the soul's identification with the body and its pleasures, which hides the Lord's supreme bliss. The verse is diagnostic: it names the problem before Krishna offers the solution of surrender.

Living it today

When caught up in excitement or gloom, remind yourself that these are passing states; something steadier lies beyond them.
