Explanation

Endowed with that faith, the devotee worships that deity and from it obtains the objects of desire. Yet those desires are in truth granted by me alone. The deities give what is asked, but the real giver is the Supreme.

Krishna clarifies the power behind the deities. Shankara explains that the Lord, who knows the results of all actions, ordains those results through the deities. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord, dwelling within the deities as their inner self, fulfilling the worshipper's desire. Madhva similarly sees the Lord as the source of every deity's power. The verse affirms that such worship works, while pointing beyond it to the one source.

Living it today

Whatever help reaches you, through people, effort or prayer, it is good to be grateful to the deeper source behind it all.
