Explanation

Of the four kinds of devotees named in 7.16, the wise one, ever steadfast and devoted to the One alone, is the best. I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and the wise one is dear to me. Their love is mutual and undivided.

Of the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth and the wise, Krishna singles out the jñānī. Shankara reads the jñānī as the knower of the Self, whose devotion is single-pointed because he sees nothing apart from the Lord. Ramanuja reads it as the devotee who loves the Lord for his own sake, without any other motive, which makes the relationship especially intimate. Both see the wise devotee as one whose love has no ulterior purpose.
