Explanation
I know all beings, past, present and future, O Arjuna; but no one knows me. The Divine sees everything, while remaining beyond the grasp of ordinary knowledge. Nothing in time is hidden from the Divine, yet beings caught in time and delusion cannot comprehend the one who stands beyond it. This sets up the explanation of delusion that follows.
The verse emphasises the asymmetry between the Lord and beings. Shankara notes that the Lord's knowledge is unobstructed because he is not deluded by maya, whereas beings, under its influence, cannot know him. Ramanuja adds that no one knows him except through devotion and his grace, a point made explicitly in 11.54. The verse prepares for the explanation of delusion in 7.27.
Living it today
Approach the Divine with humility; it is wiser to say I am still learning than to think you have it all figured out.
