Explanation
Through the delusion of the pairs of opposites, which arises from desire and aversion, all beings fall into confusion at birth, O Bharata, O scorcher of foes. From the start of life, attraction and repulsion cloud our vision. This is the root of forgetting.
This verse explains why beings do not know the Lord. Shankara says that desire and aversion produce the pairs of opposites, such as pleasure and pain, and these delude every being from the moment of birth. Ramanuja reads sarga as birth or creation and sees the delusion as rooted in past impressions carried into each life. The verse prepares for the next, which describes those who are freed from this delusion.
