Explanation
The unwise think of me, the unmanifest, as having merely come into manifestation like an ordinary being. They do not know my supreme nature, imperishable and unsurpassed. They see Krishna only as a man and miss the Divine. They see the familiar form and miss its depth.
Commentators read this verse differently according to their views. Shankara takes it as the unwise thinking that the Lord, who is unmanifest Brahman, is merely a manifest individual, failing to see his true transcendent nature. Ramanuja and Madhva read it as people mistaking Krishna for an ordinary human who was formerly unmanifest, not knowing that his divine form is eternal and supreme. Both readings warn against reducing the Divine to the familiar categories of human life.
