Explanation
Krishna agrees warmly: very well, I will tell you my divine glories, but only the chief ones, O best of the Kurus, for there is no end to my extent. A complete list is impossible because the Divine is limitless; what follows are the most prominent examples, as signposts.
Shankara reads prādhānyataḥ as the principal manifestations, since the full detail could not be told even in a hundred years. Ramanuja understands it similarly: Krishna will name the outstanding members of each class. Hanta is an expression of kindness and willingness. This verse frames the whole vibhūti list that follows: in each group of beings, Krishna will name the best, the brightest or the most powerful, and identify himself with it. The list is illustrative, not exhaustive, as he repeats in verse 40.
