Explanation
Among the Vedas I am the Sama Veda, Krishna says; among the gods I am Indra. Among the senses I am the mind, and in living beings I am consciousness, the awareness that makes them alive. Each item is the finest or most essential of its kind.
The Sama Veda consists of Vedic verses set to melody and sung in ritual; commentators say it is chosen for its beauty of sound. Vasava, lord of the Vasus, is a name of Indra, king of the gods. The mind is counted as the eleventh sense, the one that directs and unifies the others. Cetanā is the power of awareness in a living body; Shankara describes it as the function of intellect that manifests in the body-mind complex. The verse moves from scripture and the heavens to the inner life of every being.
Living it today
Your mind is the leader of your senses. Train it well, and everything else follows more easily.
