Explanation

Among weapons I am the thunderbolt, Krishna says; among cows I am Kamadhenu, the cow that grants every wish. As the cause of procreation I am Kandarpa, the god of love, and among serpents I am Vasuki. Each stands out as the mightiest or most generous of its class.

The vajra is Indra's thunderbolt, said in the Puranas to have been fashioned from the bones of the sage Dadhichi, who gave his life for the gods. Kamadhuk, or Kamadhenu, also called Surabhi, is the divine cow who yields whatever is asked of her, another treasure of the ocean's churning. Kandarpa is Kama, god of love; commentators note the qualifier prajanaḥ: desire is divine when it serves the continuation of life, not mere lust. Vasuki is the king of serpents who served as the churning rope at the samudra-manthana and is often shown around Shiva's neck.

Living it today

Desire is not the enemy when it serves life and love. Ask whether your wants are creating something good or just consuming.
