Explanation
Among the nagas I am Ananta, Krishna says; among the beings of the waters I am Varuna. Among the ancestors I am Aryaman, and among those who restrain and govern I am Yama. Each holds authority over its own realm.
Ananta, also called Shesha, is the many-hooded serpent on whom Vishnu rests on the cosmic ocean; his name means endless. Commentators distinguish the sarpas of the previous verse from the nagas here in various ways, for example as single-hooded and many-hooded serpents. Varuna is the Vedic god of the waters and guardian of cosmic order. The pitṛs are the revered ancestors, and Aryaman, one of the Adityas, is their chief. Yama is the lord of death and of dharma, who judges and restrains all beings with perfect impartiality.
