Explanation

Among purifiers I am the wind, Krishna says; among those who bear weapons I am Rama. Among creatures of the waters I am the makara, and among rivers I am the Ganga. Each is the most powerful or holiest of its kind.

Pavana, the wind, purifies by its movement; the word pavatām can mean both purifiers and swift movers. Rama is generally understood as Rama son of Dasharatha, the hero of the Ramayana, whose bow upheld dharma. The makara is a great sea creature, often pictured as a crocodile or a mythical sea-beast, and is the mount of Ganga and Varuna. Jahnavi is a name of the Ganga, from the sage Jahnu, who in one story swallowed the river when it flooded his hermitage and then released her from his ear. The Ganga is honoured as the holiest of rivers.
