Explanation

Whatever is the seed of all beings, O Arjuna, that is me. There is no being, moving or unmoving, that could exist without me. After naming many particular glories, Krishna steps back to the general truth: he is the seed of everything, not just of the excellent.

Krishna has said before that he is the eternal seed of all beings (7.10, 9.18). Shankara reads bīja as the cause of all things, and explains that whatever exists without the Lord would be empty and without real being. Ramanuja stresses that every being, in every state, depends on the Lord as its inner self and support. Carācara, the moving and the unmoving, covers animals and humans as well as plants and stones. This verse widens the vibhūti teaching from the best of each class to all of existence.

Living it today

The same source sustains the great and the small. Treat even the humblest creature or plant with care.
