Explanation

The seven great sages of old and likewise the four Manus were born from Krishna's mind and share his power. From them have come all the creatures of this world. Krishna is tracing the line of creation: before human history, the first patriarchs who populated the world themselves came forth from him.

The seven great sages (saptarṣi) are usually named as Marici, Atri, Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu and Vasishtha, though lists vary; Shankara mentions Bhrigu among them. Shankara and Ramanuja read the second phrase as four Manus, the progenitors who preside over ages of the world. Some later Vaishnava commentators instead read pūrve catvāraḥ as the four Kumaras, Sanaka and his brothers, with the Manus as a separate group. All agree on the point: the founders of the world's peoples are mānasa, mind-born, manifestations of the Lord's will.
