Explanation

Just seeing your mouths, terrible with tusks and blazing like the fire at the end of time, I have lost all sense of direction and find no comfort. Be gracious, O Lord of gods, refuge of the universe. Arjuna's description turns into a plea for mercy.

Kalanala is the fire that consumes the world at the time of dissolution (pralaya). 'I do not know the directions' describes complete disorientation. The cry 'prasida', be gracious, appears here for the first time and returns in 11.31 and 11.45; it marks the moment when wonder gives way to prayer. Commentators see the address 'abode of the universe' as Arjuna clinging to the Lord himself for shelter from the Lord's own terrible aspect.
