Explanation

Tell me, who are you in this fierce form? Salutations to you, O best of gods; be gracious. I wish to know you, the primal one, for I do not understand what you are doing. Arjuna, bewildered, asks the Lord to reveal his identity and purpose.

Though he has just praised Krishna as the eternal Person, the fierce form leaves Arjuna asking afresh: who are you, and what is this activity (pravritti)? The question leads directly to the famous reply in 11.32, 'I am Time'. Commentators note the mix of reverence and confusion: Arjuna bows and prays even while he does not understand. Shankara takes pravritti as the Lord's intention or course of action, which Krishna explains next.
