Explanation

Whoever truly knows spirit and nature along with the qualities in this way is not born again, however he may be living or acting. Knowing the difference between spirit and nature is itself the freedom, whatever outer life such a person leads.

The phrase in whatever way he lives has drawn much comment. Shankara explains that for one who has realised the self, past karma that has begun to bear fruit works itself out, but no new binding karma is formed, because the sense of being the doer is gone. Other commentators caution that such knowledge naturally produces right conduct, so the verse is not a licence for careless living. The emphasis is on knowledge as the decisive freedom.

Living it today

Clear understanding changes how you carry your actions. Do the same work, but without the heavy sense that everything depends on you.
