Explanation

When one sees the separate existence of all beings as resting in the One, and their whole expansion as coming from that One alone, then one attains Brahman. The many are seen as rooted in the One and flowing out from it, like waves rising from one ocean.

The many are not denied but seen in their source, as waves are seen in the ocean. Shankara reads this as the realisation that all diversity is in the one self, so that the knower becomes Brahman. Ramanuja reads it as seeing all souls as alike in their essential nature, beyond the differences of bodies, which leads to attaining the pure self. Both readings move from diversity to underlying unity.
