Explanation

Because it is beginningless and beyond the qualities, this imperishable supreme self, though dwelling in the body, neither acts nor is tainted, O son of Kunti. The self does not change because it has no beginning and no qualities that could be altered.

Whatever has a beginning has parts and can change; whatever has qualities can be affected. The self has neither, so it remains untouched though housed in a body. Shankara stresses that action and its results belong to the body-mind complex only. Ramanuja applies the verse to the individual self in its pure state, which is not truly stained by bodily actions. The next two verses give images to make this vivid.

Living it today

Mistakes stain the record, not your deepest self. Learn, make amends, and do not let guilt convince you that you are beyond repair.
