Explanation

Just as the one sun lights up this whole world, so the lord of the field lights up the whole field, O Bharata. The sun shows everything without being changed by it, and in the same way consciousness lights up body and mind while staying untouched.

The sun shows everything, the beautiful and the ugly, without being changed by what it shows. In the same way, consciousness makes the entire body and mind known while remaining itself unaffected. Commentators note the image also implies oneness: one sun, many objects lit. Shankara applies this to the one self; Ramanuja applies it to each self illuminating its own body through its consciousness.

Living it today

Your awareness is like sunlight on your thoughts. You can watch even troubled thoughts without being darkened by them.
