Explanation

Those who, with the eye of knowledge, see the difference between the field and the knower of the field, and know the way of freedom from nature, reach the supreme. This clear discernment between observer and observed is the goal of the whole chapter.

The chapter ends by summing up its purpose: to see clearly, with an inner eye, the line between what is known and the knower. This discernment, called viveka, is what releases one from bondage to prakriti. Shankara explains bhuta-prakriti-moksha as freedom from nature, the cause of beings, which arises from knowledge. The next chapter continues by analysing nature's three gunas in detail.

Living it today

Practise telling apart what happens to you from the you who notices it. That small distinction is the beginning of freedom.
