Explanation

Of these, sattva, being pure, is illuminating and free from affliction. Yet it binds by attachment to happiness and attachment to knowledge, O sinless one. Even the finest of the three gunas can become a subtle bond when one clings to it.

Sattva is clarity, calm and goodness, the best of the three, yet even it can become a subtle chain. One can become attached to feeling peaceful or to being the one who knows. Shankara notes that the self is wrongly thought to be happy or wise, when these are states of the mind. Many teachers call this the golden chain: finer than iron, but still a chain.

Living it today

Enjoy calm and learning, but watch for pride in being calm or learned. Even good states can become a quiet trap.
