Explanation

Taking refuge in insatiable desire, full of hypocrisy, pride and arrogance, they seize upon false ideas out of delusion and go about their work with impure vows. Desire becomes their shelter, yet it can never be filled; confused by it, they cling to wrong notions and commit themselves to goals that are unclean.

The verse echoes 3.39, where desire is called a fire that is never satisfied. Shankara takes asad-grāhān as wrong fixed ideas, such as believing that some harmful rite or scheme will bring wealth, and aśuci-vratāḥ as vows or resolutions of an impure kind. Commentators point out the irony: those who reject any higher refuge still take refuge in something, and the refuge they choose is the one that can never give rest.

Living it today

Notice where you seek comfort. If it is in wanting more, ask whether that wanting has ever actually been satisfied.
