Explanation
Bewildered by countless thoughts, caught in the net of delusion and addicted to the enjoyment of desires, they fall into a foul hell. The mind that chases many goals at once becomes scattered and confused, tangled as if in a net, and its attachments drag it downward.
The image of the net (jāla) suggests a trap that tightens the more one struggles within it. Traditional commentators such as Shankara and Ramanuja take naraka literally as a place of suffering after death. Many modern readers also read it as the inner hell of restlessness, fear and dissatisfaction that such a life produces even now. Both readings agree that the fall is the natural result of the attachments described, not an arbitrary punishment.
Living it today
A scattered mind chasing many desires rarely finds peace. Simplify one area of life this week and notice how much clearer you feel.
