Explanation
Those hateful and cruel people, the lowest among humans and doers of evil, I repeatedly cast into demonic births in the cycles of worldly existence. Krishna speaks of the consequence of such a life in terms of rebirth: the tendencies a person cultivates lead to births where those same tendencies are reinforced.
This and the next verse are among the sternest in the Gita. Commentators are careful to read them in the light of karma. Shankara and Ramanuja explain that the Lord acts as the dispenser of results according to one's own deeds, not out of anger. Madhva, in line with his view of differing natures of souls, reads the verse more strongly. Many modern interpreters emphasise that the 'casting' describes a natural law: we become what we repeatedly do. The Gita elsewhere (9.30) holds open the door to change for anyone who turns sincerely.
Living it today
Habits repeated become character, and character shapes the future. Choosing kindness today is a way of shaping who you will become tomorrow.
