Explanation

Non-violence, truthfulness, freedom from anger, renunciation, inner peace, refraining from slander, compassion towards all beings, freedom from greed, gentleness, modesty and steadiness of mind. These continue the list of divine qualities begun in the previous verse, describing a person whose speech, emotions and dealings with others have become calm, honest and kind.

This verse forms the middle of the three-verse catalogue of the daivī sampad, the divine endowment. Many of its items echo the yamas of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, such as ahimsa and satya. Shankara explains tyāga as giving up, as distinct from dāna in 16.1, which is giving away; Ramanuja reads it as giving up things that harm the self. Hrī is often glossed as the healthy shame that holds one back from improper acts, and acāpala as not moving hands, feet or tongue without purpose.
