Explanation

The divine endowment is said to lead to liberation and the demonic to bondage. Do not grieve, O son of Pandu, for you are born with the divine endowment. Krishna states the result of each set of qualities and then reassures Arjuna, who may have begun to wonder which list describes him.

The verse gives the purpose of the whole chapter: these qualities are not merely moral labels but forces that either free or bind. Shankara and Ramanuja both read Krishna's words as a direct reassurance, since Arjuna's hesitation to fight came from compassion and concern for dharma, not from hatred or greed. Some modern readers, including Gandhi, read the divine and demonic as two armies within each person, and see the reassurance as offered to every sincere seeker who is willing to cultivate the first and resist the second.

Living it today

Self-examination should lead to effort, not despair. If you sincerely want to grow, that wish itself is a sign of the divine nature at work in you.
