Explanation

Krishna now introduces two more triads. Hear, Arjuna, the threefold division of understanding and of resolve according to the gunas, explained fully and one by one. After knowledge, action and the doer, he turns to the faculties that judge and that hold a person steady.

Buddhi is the discerning intellect that decides what is right; dhṛti is the firmness that keeps one on course. Shankara notes that these two govern how all the earlier factors play out in practice. Ramanuja reads buddhi as the faculty that determines what is to be done and avoided. The verse marks a transition and the epithet Dhananjaya, winner of wealth, recalls Arjuna's own strength.

भावार्थ

हे धनञ्जय, अब गुणों के अनुसार बुद्धि और धृति के तीन-तीन भेद पूरी तरह और अलग-अलग मुझसे सुनो।
