Explanation

Renouncing one's obligatory duties is not right. When such duties are abandoned through confusion or delusion, Krishna says, that kind of giving up is tamasic, born of darkness and inertia. It looks like renunciation but is really neglect. The duty remains; only the clarity is missing.

This begins the threefold analysis promised in 18.4. Niyata karma means the duties that fall to one by station and circumstance. Shankara notes that if these purify the mind, giving them up out of ignorance can only be harmful. Ramanuja reads moha as mistaking these duties for things that bind, when in truth they are a means to freedom. The verse recalls Arjuna's own position in chapter 1, when grief and confusion tempted him to lay down his bow.

भावार्थ

नियत कर्तव्य कर्म का त्याग उचित नहीं है। मोह के कारण उसका त्याग कर देना तामस त्याग कहा गया है।

Living it today

Walking away from a real responsibility because you feel confused is not freedom. Get clear first, then decide.
