Explanation

Living beings come from food; food comes from rain; rain comes from sacrifice; and sacrifice is born of action.

This and the next two verses describe a cycle (chakra) linking life, nature and human effort. In the Vedic view, offerings sustain the cosmic order that brings rain. Shankara follows the traditional idea that offerings reach the sun and return as rain, as Manu also says. Modern readers see an ecological chain: all life depends on food, food on rain, and rain on a balance that human conduct helps maintain. Action is the first link humans control.
