Explanation

Others offer all the functions of the senses and all the functions of the life-breath into the fire of the yoga of self-restraint, a fire kindled by knowledge. Here the whole activity of body and mind is drawn inward and stilled.

This is a higher form of the inner sacrifice of 4.26. Shankara explains it as gathering in all activity of the senses and breath and dissolving it in the controlled self, which is illumined by discriminating knowledge. Ramanuja reads it as directing the mind away from the senses and the breath toward contemplation of the Self. The verse anticipates the meditation teaching of chapter 6, where the mind is withdrawn and settled in the Self.

भावार्थ

कुछ अन्य साधक इन्द्रियों के सारे कर्मों और प्राणों के सारे कर्मों को ज्ञान से प्रकाशित आत्मसंयमरूपी योग की अग्नि में हवन कर देते हैं।

Living it today

Set aside a few minutes to be still. Quietening body and mind, even briefly, is its own kind of offering.
