Explanation
Others, regulating their food, offer the life-breaths into the life-breaths. All of these understand sacrifice, and through their sacrifice their impurities are worn away. Whatever the outward form of the discipline, sincere practice cleanses the one who undertakes it.
Shankara explains niyatāhāra as limiting one's food, through which the vital functions are weakened and merged into one another, a form of austerity. Ramanuja reads it as disciplined eating that supports the practice of breath control. The second line closes the list that began in 4.25 with a generous statement: all these practitioners are knowers of yajña and are purified. The Gita does not rank them here; that comes in 4.33.
