Explanation
Actions do not bind one who has renounced action through yoga, whose doubts have been cut away by knowledge, and who is master of himself, O Dhananjaya. Yoga, knowledge and self-possession together bring freedom even in the midst of activity.
This verse sums up the chapter, bringing together its two strands: renunciation of action through yoga and the cutting of doubt through knowledge. Shankara reads yoga-saṃnyasta as one who has renounced all action through knowledge of the supreme truth. Ramanuja reads it as one who has given up attachment to action through the yoga of discrimination, while still acting. The verse prepares for chapter 5, which takes up the relation of renunciation and action directly.
