Explanation

Krishna says that his birth and his work are divine. Whoever truly understands this, in its real nature, is not born again after leaving the body, but comes to him. Knowing the Lord rightly is itself a path to freedom.

Having described the purpose of the avatara in verses 7 and 8, Krishna now gives the fruit of understanding it. Shankara reads divya as meaning not of the ordinary kind, a manifestation through the Lord's own power, and holds that true knowledge of the Lord brings liberation. Ramanuja emphasises that the Lord's birth and deeds are real yet free from karma, and that meditating on them with understanding leads the devotee to him. The verse links the theology of the avatara to the practical goal of release from rebirth.
