Explanation

One who is united in yoga, pure in mind, master of himself, with senses under control, and who feels his own self as the self of all beings, is not tainted even while acting. Such a person works constantly, yet action leaves no binding mark.

The verse describes the mature karma yogi step by step, from discipline of body and senses to the widest vision. Shankara reads the compound sarva-bhūtātma-bhūtātmā as seeing one Self in all, from Brahma down to a blade of grass. Ramanuja understands it as recognising that all selves share the same nature of pure consciousness, so one feels for others as for oneself. Either way, the verse links inner purity with a sense of kinship with every being.

Living it today

Treat the people you work with as extensions of yourself; it removes much of the friction and the hidden guilt that action can leave behind.
