Explanation
The yogi should constantly practise concentrating the mind, staying in a secluded place, alone, with mind and body restrained, free from cravings and without possessiveness. This is the first instruction for one who wants to meditate: find quiet, simplify desire and let go of the urge to hold on.
Here begins the Gita's practical guide to meditation, which runs to 6.17 and covers place, seat, posture, gaze, attitude and lifestyle. Seclusion and solitude remove outer distraction; freedom from craving and possessiveness remove inner distraction. Shankara reads 'yata-citta-ātmā' as one who has controlled both mind and body. Aparigraha, non-possessiveness, is also one of the yamas in Patanjali's Yoga Sutra. Most modern teachers, following the Gita's own balance, take 'constantly' to mean a regular daily practice rather than a life withdrawn from all duties.
Living it today
Find a quiet corner and a fixed time each day, even ten minutes, with your phone in another room. Solitude for practice need not mean leaving home.
