Explanation

Serene and free from fear, firm in the vow of brahmacharya, restraining the mind and fixing his thought on me, the yogi should sit disciplined, holding me as the supreme goal. Calm, courage and restraint are the inner seat on which meditation rests.

Inner conditions now join the outer ones: calm, fearlessness and self-restraint. Shankara explains the brahmacharya vow as the traditional discipline of the student, service to the teacher, simple living and celibacy; later readers often take it more broadly as moderation and conservation of energy. The key words are 'mat-cittaḥ' and 'mat-paraḥ': the object of meditation is Krishna himself. Ramanuja stresses this as showing that the Gita's yoga culminates in devotion, a theme brought to a peak in 6.47.
