Explanation

When the well-disciplined mind rests in the Self alone, and the person is free from longing for all objects of desire, then he is said to be united in yoga. The mind is no longer forced; it settles in the Self on its own.

Having given the method and the lifestyle, Krishna now gives the mark of success. The mind is not forced into blankness; it settles in the Self of its own accord, because desire no longer pulls it outward. 'Niḥspṛha' is a stronger word than mere restraint: the longing itself has fallen away. Shankara describes this as the mind being withdrawn from all external objects and established in the Self. The next verse (6.19) gives the famous image of the lamp in a windless place to describe this state.

Living it today
