Meaning in English
O Pandava (son of Pandu), know that what people call renunciation is the same as yoga. For no one becomes a yogi without giving up selfish intentions and mental scheming.

Explanation
What people call renunciation, know that to be yoga, O son of Pandu. For no one becomes a yogi without first giving up saṅkalpa, the restless planning and willing of the self-centred mind. Inner letting-go, not outer withdrawal, is what matters.
This repeats a theme of Chapter 5 (5.4 and 5.5), where Krishna says the wise see sannyasa and yoga as one. The common ground is the giving up of saṅkalpa. Shankara explains saṅkalpa as the mental scheming that gives rise to desire for results; whoever still plans 'I will get this from my action' has not renounced, whatever robe he wears. Commentators across schools agree that the verse makes renunciation an inner discipline, which is why it can be practised by a householder as well as by a monk.
Living it today
Notice how often your mind plans what you will get out of a task. Letting go of a little of that scheming is the real start of yoga.
