Explanation

Arjuna said: O Krishna, what becomes of one who has faith but does not strive enough, whose mind wanders away from yoga, so that he fails to reach perfection in yoga? What end does he meet? Arjuna is asking about the sincere but unfinished seeker.

Having heard that yoga is difficult, Arjuna asks the natural next question: what about those who try and fail? This seeker is sincere, 'endowed with faith', but lacks sufficient effort (ayati), and the mind slips away, perhaps at the time of death. Shankara and others note that the question concerns someone who has given up worldly goals for the spiritual path but has not completed it. Arjuna's worry, spelled out in the next two verses, is that such a person may lose both worlds.
