Explanation

O Krishna, please cut away this doubt of mine completely. Other than you, no one can be found who can remove this doubt. Arjuna turns to Krishna as the one teacher able to see beyond this life and answer his question about the fate of the failed seeker.

Arjuna closes his question with trust. The verb 'chid', to cut, is often used in the Gita and Upanishads for doubt, which is pictured as a knot or tangle that must be severed (compare 4.42). His words also recognise Krishna as more than a friend and charioteer: as the teacher who sees what others cannot, including the fate of a soul beyond this life. Commentators read the verse as a model of how a student should approach a teacher, with a clear question and full confidence.
