Explanation

The Blessed Lord said: O son of Pritha, there is no destruction for him, either in this world or in the next. For no one who does good, my dear friend, ever comes to a bad end. No sincere effort is ever wasted.

This is one of the most comforting verses of the Gita. Krishna answers Arjuna's fear of being 'fallen from both' with a firm no. 'Tāta', an affectionate word used by a father to a son or an elder to a younger, shows the warmth of the reply. 'Kalyāṇa-kṛt', the doer of good, includes anyone who sincerely sets out on the spiritual path. Every commentator reads the verse as a promise that no sincere effort is ever wasted, which echoes 2.40: 'even a little of this practice protects from great fear'.

Living it today

No sincere good effort is wasted, even if it seems to fail. Keep doing good, and trust that it is building something in you.
